Russell: God Works Through You

Many authors have written about natural laws that govern perception, reality and the power of mind and thoughts. Over the next several days, we will explore the various ways these writers have named and described these laws. This examination is merely a quick look at each of these laws, however. It is recommended that you study the books mentioned for yourself to gain a deeper understand of The Laws and how to apply them in your life.

In 1957 Robert A. Russell published a book titled “God Works Through You.” In it he describes eight avenues through which God works in the world. These eight avenues are not presented as laws per se, but for our purposes in this examination we will treat them as such. Today we will begin our look at each of these eight methods of God.

God Works Through You

As science continues to study the makeup of matter more and more in-depth, the very nature of the universe becomes less and less concrete. The solid rules we observe in our large-scale view of the world begin to break down as our viewpoint gets smaller and smaller. Solid matter becomes atoms, and then the atoms become protons, neutrons and electrons orbiting each other at vast relative distances. These atomic components break down even further, and with each step the rules that govern them become less and less obvious. The smaller the scale becomes, the less the discussion of it sounds like traditional science and the more it begins to sound like philosophy.

Many scientists have even predicted that, as we are able to look more and more closely at the substance around us, we will gradually reach a point of merging science and religion. Not the stereotypical, orthodox, institutionalized religion of the past, but as a more fundamental understanding of the core of reality.

This shift requires an adjustment in understanding from both sides. The traditional scientist must open his mind up to the possibility of something beyond the tangible, quantifiable evidence with which he is used to dealing. The traditional religionist must re-evaluate his own beliefs, and take an honest look at the basis of them and why he believes them. Both sides get so caught up in specific and ultimately unimportant details that it becomes a “forest for the trees” situation. The result of this for both will most commonly be a change of perspective. The core of what he believes doesn’t change, but the wrapping, the packaging, the outward dressing of it will be stripped away to reveal the truth beneath.

Science is beginning to realize the need for the existence of a power that unifies the smallest, most fundamental elements of reality, a force that gives them structure and form. Religion has said that God is everywhere, omniscient and omnipotent. Are these ideas contradictory?

Science says that the universe was created by a big bang, all matter and energy that exists exploding out of a single, unmeasurable point. Religion says that the universe was created when God spoke it into being. Are they mutually exclusive, or does one sound like just another way of describing the other?

What does all this have to do with God working through you? You are linked directly to God, to the unifying force. Not the physical you that is sitting in the chair, but the spiritual You that experiences the physical world through the body in the chair. You come from God, and your mind has the ability to link to the Universal Mind. When you become aware of the Spirit of God inside you, the link between God, You and the you in the chair, you open a channel to allow God to work through you in the world around you.

When Jesus said, “…the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works,” (John 14:10) this is what he meant. When we cease to rely upon the resources of our own personality and return to our connection to God, to His power, that is when we allow God to work through us.
